PELOPONNESE WINE TOUR
Nemea only an hour and a half away from Athens is the heart of the most organized vineyard in Greece. This tour guides you through some of the most exceptional wineries in the area, where you will try the trully world class local wine, steeped in the 3000-year history of the region. The vineyard has an area of about 27,000 acres and extends to the basin and the slopes of the surrounding hills. Nemea is the homeland of the local variety “Agiorgitiko”, from which famous wines are produced in the dozens of wineries in the region. Nemea has a great history in ancient years and preserved important ancient monuments, such as the ruins of the Temple of Zeus and numerous other findings, exhibited in the Modern museum of the region. The fact that for millennia the inhabitants of the region cultivate the same product during various historical periods characterised by major movements and intense conflicts, shows that this activity produced profitability and it created respect even for the conquerors. Agiorgitiko is a variety that offers great possibilities of flexibility to winemakers. Depending on its origin (flat, hilly, mountainous) the Agiorgitiko grape can be used for the production of wide-ranging range of wines: from aromatic rosé to red. The area is best known for its relatively light, fortified and easy-to-dry red wines, as well as the robust reds, which require perennial ageing in barrels and in the bottle before they are consumed. They are friendly and warm with velvety texture and abundant aromas of spices and nuts that make them fit with almost all the cooked dishes of the classic Greek cuisine. Nemea Wine Tour gives you the opportunity to visit a bunch of exceptional wineries in the area, try the world-class local wines, and explore the 30 centuries’ history of the region.
